Pennsylvania Families and Childrens Equality Kicks off 1st Annual "FreedomBikeTrek4Families"

This event will be a part of a major event linking riders from 2 states in support of Federal and State Equal Parenting Rights.

Fairless Hills PA. July 5th, 2009: Pennsylvania Families and Childrens Equality are holding its first annual road bike trek to promote State House Bill 463 -- the Presumption of Joint Physical Custody in the State of Pennsylvania.

  • Bill Koellner of Levittown, Pa and Bill Gibbons of Fairless Hills, Pa will ride their bikes 310 miles from Independence Hall / Peoples Park thru Harrisburg down to DC in only 4 days.

  • Both riders will meet up with a group from Lansing Michigan on Thursday July 16th on its last 80 mile trek down to DC ? in conjunction with the annual "ParentStock" Festival held on the Lincoln Monument.

Monday Morning July 13th at Peoples Park / Independence Hall ? Phila. Pa. from 9-11am.

  • Speakers from PA FACE will discuss topics that relate to this underpublicized issue ? Non Custodial Parents who want equal time with their children.? House Bill 463 will bring both parents closer to their children.

  • The ride"s goal is for media attention for the bill on the floor, as well as to show that non-custodial parents (mostly fathers) want to be in their children"s lives ? but the courts and laws separate them by broken / outdated legislation and Title 4D of the Social Security Act.

  • To get more information, please contact Bill Gibbons at the above cell phone or email address.

  • Both riders will be available for interviews and photo opportunities.

Popular Law Blog Divorce Without Dishonor Included in "Divorce for Dummies"

Divorce Without Dishonor is an online publication emphasizing positive parenting, collaborative law strategies, and child-centered divorce practices through written articles, links, and resources that are presented by professionals for no cost to the public-at-large. STOP Fighting Over the Kids: Resolving Day-to-Day Custody Conflict in Divorce Situations is part of the Divorce Without Dishonor Series in print form.

The online publication and the print book help bring to light a better way to divorce, by demonstrating that divorce without dishonor is possible by listening, collaborating, and exiting a failing relationship with dignity and respect on behalf of children and communities. "Much of what is discussed in Divorce Without Dishonor and Stop Fighting Over the Kids is a consumer awareness piece that demonstrates there are viable alternatives to the adversarial and expensive divorce process," states Lary Holland.

In 2009, Divorce Without Dishonor was referenced on the online and print version of the immensely popular "Divorce for Dummies" book:

    Divorce Without Dishonor

    http://www.divorcewithoutdishonor.com

You can see from the quality of the postings here that the author, a divorce attorney who went through his own painful divorce, puts a lot of thought and effort into his blog. He not only provides compassionate, practical advice about the major aspects of divorce but writes about such topics as how to overcome the guilt you feel because of your divorce and how to help your child cope with the emotions he or she may feel because of your divorce, tips for moving out of your family's home when you separate, and why some divorced fathers become ghost dads after their divorce --- fathers who pay the child support, but drift out of their children's day to day lives. The blog also highlights interesting divorce-related Web sites to check out, studies to learn from and divorce books to read, and even features quotes that will make you laugh or inspire you as you go through your divorce. (Divorce for Dummies. NJ: Wiley Publishing, 2009. 334-335. Print.)

In essence, inclusion of Divorce Without Dishonor in the Divorce for Dummies print book delivers the information and resources to a larger audience and continues to influence parents and professionals on the issues of positive parenting, collaborative law strategies, and child-centered
divorce practices through written articles, links, and resources.

Moving past the past and into the future...

I had always shared with people that the best day in life since the age of 18 was July 2nd for me. The thing is, many people have a special date because they think it is magic or just their lucky day. The second of July is a day of personal growth every year and a day of decision-making and goal-setting for me. The main point is... luck, magic, etc. has nothing to do with the day... It's a day that I personally choose to be special and enjoy doing so.

Over the past many years, life has been slow and many changes have taken hold. Not what I originally planned, but life is getting more enjoyable and even more changes are taking hold because I am making them. I have gone back to my roots and discovered that so many people are having a hard time coping with their circumstances, whether it is divorce, child-custody, or just being a victim about everything happening in their life.? I might have forgotten for a minute that my strongest skill is problem-solving no matter what the problem is. Too many people get caught up in their past that prevents them from reaching success in their future. I am using my skills to build some pretty amazing things lately.

So my personal blog is changing soon and reflecting some of the very enjoyable things that I am doing mixed with an occasional opinion piece with a positive twist. So as we go into this Independence Day weekend, enjoy a parade in your hometown, enjoy the holiday reaching out to friends, and most of all enjoy who you are becoming. Independence Day can be taken a few different ways, in the political sense or the personal choice sense. We are all masters of our future so my independence comes with defining the future.

So every year about this time I have a small black book that was given to me as a gift that I take a peek into. Hand-written quotes, flip through some of the pages and see what sticks with me:

"Missing someone gets easier everyday because even though you are one day further from the last time you saw them, you are one day closer to the next time you will" -Unknown.

"In order for you to insult me, I must first value your opinion." -Unknown.

"Grow old along with me. The best is yet to be." -Rabbi Benezra

It is a great year so far and getting better. I dedicate my life to succeeding for my children, my family, and my community. That is how we begin to maintain freedom if we are to "lead by example" in our communities. Insert any series of events in your past and you can make it through the dim times by taking the best things from your past as tools for a brighter positive future. You don't have to take the negative with you. Now, I'm going to go finish my cup of coffee on the deck this morning and finish watching the sun come up and watch the blog for some of the fun that I am seriously about to have.

Rebuilding Life in the Fast Lane: Starts with doing SOMETHING!

    ?

I posted a few exchanges yesterday online because it seemed like the general mood of society took at three point dip temporarily. Might have been the star alignments, the oil spill, or some other proximate cause but I offered up this advice:

"I think that we should all live our dreams and only we can make those dreams happen! So many times we find ourselves waiting for something to happen instead of being the force to make it happen. It might not be easy, it might not be quick, but I tell you we can all make it happen if we really want to."

I guess my problem with so many people is that they withdraw, let depression hit becoming unproductive, or just isolate in general to one single issue to the destruction of everything else around them. Take a step back and start with your own community and find a local community calendar and then get out and start to do things. Reconnect with friends. Reconnect with family. You would be surprised how many people you can really help just by being out in the public sharing ways to make things better. Advocacy efforts can really only be successful if your advocacy focuses on truly building better communities. Better communities, better education, better interaction. It's like a speech I gave years ago at the Flint City Council Meeting... "individuals come together to make families, families come together to make neighborhoods and communities, and neighborhoods come together for their government." If any of those links are weak everything that comes after them will be flawed or weak too.

Let's build healthy communities to solve the problems that are plaguing society. It will be more fun.

    Why We Get Divorced

I spend an awful lot of time contemplating Divorce From a business prospective and from a sociological view, Divorce occupies a great deal of my waking time. How we get together, why we split apart, it alternately fascinates and horrifies me. I guess it is hazard of my chosen profession, but, as an Atlanta Divorce Attorney, their are very real implications that need to be explored. In surfing the net recently, I stumbled across a posting on another site that contained an article citing a study from the Center for Disease Control that indicates that Forty-Three Percent Of First Marriages Break-Up Within 15 Years. It also indicated that that one in three first marriages end within ten years and one in five end within five years. While the findings are based on data from the 1995 National Survey of Family Growth, a study of 10,847 women 15-44 years of age and are of questionable timeliness, it did get me thinking about how our society views marriage, and subsequently divorce. (To read the entire article click here )

After practicing for nearly fifteen years and having gone through my own divorce ten years ago, my observational opinion is that two specific factors have led to the increase in the divorce rate is the rise of the two income homes and the increase in our life expectancy.

The first cause, the increase in two income homes, is really just another way of saying that our lives have grown increasingly complicated and hectic and failures to communicate (even if it is just that you do not have the time to communicate) are a sure fire way to end up in front of me, or one of my brethren of the bar. With both parents working, time to talk and parent comes at a premium and often take a back seat to the pressures of modern life.

Secondly, I think our concept of "until death do we part" was coined and incorporated into our national psyche generations ago, when the average person did not expect to easily live to over 77 years of age. Today, I often get clients in my office that are 50+ years old, have been married for in excess of 25 years and feel that they have 25-30 "good" years left and they want to find some new happiness. I truly believe that this is one of the root causes of what appears to be disposable marriages.

Of course, this is just my opinion. I could be wrong ;-)

Welcome to the Atlanta Divorce Lawyer Blog

Thanks for stopping in to take a look at my contribution to the blogosphere. I hope you find my postings helpful, knowledgeable, timely and (dare I say) occasionally amusing. My goal is to help individuals with divorce and family law issues that are tied to the State of Georgia. To give some basic understanding of the status of the family law in Georgia and to provide insight and access to where you can go to get information that addresses your specific needs. My goal is not to form a lawyer-client relationship. For that, you need to contact my office in order to discuss your specific problems and concerns and I can explain your rights, responsibilities and options.

First, I"d like to share a little about what I do and why I do it. I have been practicing law since 1994 and Divorce and family law has grown to be the largest portion of my law practice. Perhaps the most common questions I get from people that learn I practice Divorce law is some variation on. . . ?That must be an awful way to earn a living"" Frankly speaking, there were times in the past that I couldn"t help but agree. However, this feeling dramatically changed a little over six years ago. With the birth of my first child, and my second, two years later, it opened up a brand new perspective on my Georgia Family Law practice. The service I was providing clients somehow became "realer" and more urgent. I felt as if I had never truly understood the importance and emotional discord felt by those I was representing. Now that I have acquired this new point of view, I feel it makes me both a more determined advocate, as well as giving me a greater understating of the BIG picture facing my clients. I think it has made me a better lawyer, father and husband.

I am now happy to say I work in the Family Law field. Not every case is a happy one and being involved in these matters can still be a gut-wrenching experience. But I know that I am providing a service that is valuable and necessary. With the possible exception of certain areas of criminal law (an area I in which I have never practiced) I believe no other legal practice area deals with issues and circumstances that are as close to the heart as Family Law. This allows me to continue working in a field that others might feel is unpleasant.

    Uncontested Divorce? Really?

"My Divorce will be very simple, we are not fighting about anything." This is the beginning of the vast majority of the inquiries an uncontested divorce. Unfortunately, after asking a few questions of the prospective client, I usually tell them, "My friend, you have just not found out what you are fighting about yet." The reality is, no one wants to pay a lawyer by the hour to handle their Divorce. Needless to say, I have yet to understand why people have a reluctance to pay me and my fellow members of the bar. ;-) Seriously though, when I begin questioning them with specificity on issues of child support, custody, division of assets and liabilities, it often dawns on them that what appeared as an open and shut matter, is now more complicated. Unfortunately, a professional hazard of a Divorce Attorney in Atlanta, or any other jurisdiction, is that we get to focus on the worst case scenarios. What can go wrong, often does, and proper planning and, yes, the spending of precious financial resources is usually necessary to avoid major problems going forward.

Bottom line, when an uncontested divorce is possible, we try to achieve it. However, when the facts presented do not lend themselves to a quick and relatively painless process, we prepare the client for the eventualities of the Divorce process; while keeping our eye on the bottom line financial reality of the individual client.

Remember, we offer free consultations on the phone and can usually get an idea of potentially how complicated your family law matter will be in a fairly short time. Give SHAPIRO LAW GROUP a call at 770.604.9292 or send me an e-mail.
